The term “classic” is largely subjective. Not only when applied to cars, either. There are wide variations in what people consider classics. For example, the film The Shawshank Redemption was fairly widely ignored when it initially came out, but today it is considered one of the finest pieces of film making to come out of Hollywood. Although the term “classical music” now applies to a certain style of music, along the lines of Tchaikovsky and Beethoven in the past and the likes of Michael Nyman and Philip Glass in this era, there are many who would argue for the albums of the Beatles and some of their contemporaries, and indeed even a band as current as Radiohead, being eligible for the pantheon of “classic albums”. 

When it comes to cars, an equal debate exists over what makes a classic. You could ask several different people, even automobile enthusiasts, what they consider to make a classic car, and get wildly varying answers. It may apply to a car which was the pre-eminent example of engineering for its era. It could equally apply to a car that was seen as an important innovation in its time, making it possible for the automotive industry to move forward and create the archetypes of modern automobiles. Still others might say that a classic car was any example of engineering that stood out as being of literary or historical renown – driven by a famous figure in the arts or by a statesman of some repute. By those standards, a classic automobile does not need to be one that was created half a century ago or more. Depending on your definition of “classic” – that is, the definition that you feel most accurately covers the range into which classic cars fall – you might consider the General Lee from popular TV series The Dukes of Hazard which itself was a 1969 Dodge Charger to be a classic car. Certainly, anyone in possession of a VW Beetle as made famous by the Herbie movies would feel pretty confident of the classic status of their car. On balance, there are so many competing definitions for the term that anyone who feels they own a classic automobile could at least attempt to make a case for their defence. It is a title more of consensus than of absolutism.

I was introduced to the wonderful world of jazz a little over 4 years ago on holiday up in St. Augustine, FL I stumbled upon a winery overlooking the oldest city in the US, listening to some Jazz. That moment has never left me and neither has my love of Jazz.

As a huge fan of Dave Koz, you can imagine my excitement when I found out about the 4th annual Dave Koz and Friends At Sea cruise.  I completely dropped the ball about reporting this last year, but I’m back on the good foot.  Dave Koz has been the first acts that I have ever seen perform live; and it was worth it.  The way he manipulates the sax into ’saying’ exactly what he wants it to say is mind blowing!  I spoke via the internet with a fellow fan that had gone two years ago on Dave’s cruise and he said that it was fabulous. 

Some of Dave’s friends will include Eric Benet, George Duke, Najee (another one of my personal favorites), Brian Simpson and other Grammy Award winning artists.  They will be getting the party started while making stops in Grand Turk, St. Thomas, St. Barth’s and Half Moon Cay.

Moreover, these days the compositions of great classics is harder and harder to take in – no wonder why: as the world changes, so does the taste of people. That is why I „smuggle” the elements of pop music into my compositions as well as the heritage of Chopin or Tchaikovsky” – Levente Egry spoke of his new production, „Sentimental Piano Concert” to the magazine” STOP”.

However, to get this far, the young pianist/composer needed a lot of experience and routine – thus as a musician and producer he tested himself outside the borders of Hungary as well. He even worked in the USA with such an internationally acknowledged artists like Anastacia, Tarkan or Celine Dion. Finally, Levy, who has been playing the piano since the age of 7 and graduated from the conservatoire and High School of Music, summed up the experience of all those years in order to start his new production. „ My goal is to evoke the European heritage of Classical Music as well as the reinterpretation of musical Romanticism” – he says.

„I have a lot to work on the music but soon we can start the recordings” – Levente says who in the last couple of months has been doing nothing but composing. „Generally I wake up around 11 AM and go to bed around 5-6 in the morning. I can gain the most from composing at night – maybe because of the silence. Although if it were conscious that would be a subject of teaching.” He also added that the negotiations concerning the album proceed very well.

„Demos sent to any part of the world receive delighted feedback. Furthermore not only from the nearby German, Southern – European and English territories but from Near East and Asia as well. Some of them wanted to release even the demo recordings! I also realized that the Italians, the Spanish and even the Japans and the Chinese feel like being relatives with Hungarians – they can be so much identified with our music. For instance , In Peking I was over-admired when it turned out that I was Hungarian” – told the musician

Does the cold, cerebral feel of modern jazz leave you cold? Maybe you’d like to have a little bit of “gospel” in your jazz? Maybe you just want to take an old hymn and give it some updating. Then you’ll need to load yourself with an arsenal of gospel jazz chords.
Gospel jazz chords involve extending the dominant seventh chord with additional tones. The ninth, 11th and 13th chords are all used in gospel jazz. These are extensions of the basic dominant seventh chord. If you don’t know how to form a dominant seventh, here’s the rundown.
The dominant seventh is formed by taking a basic triad, which is 1-3-5, and adding a b7. In the key of C, you would play the notes C, E, G and Bb. The C chord is formed by the C, E and G. The major seventh is B, so you would lower it a half-step to get Bb. Play this chord and notice how it brings to mind some great blues and jazz. The C dominant seventh chord is written as C7.
Now you’re going to learn a bit more theory to understand gospel jazz chords. Since the notes of a major scale are numbered 1-7, where does the ninth tone come from? It comes from extending the scale beyond one octave. After the seventh tone of the scale comes the root, which is considered the eighth tone of the scale. So the ninth tone is the second, only an octave higher. To form a ninth chord, take a dominant seventh and add the ninth.
The 11th and 13th chords are formed in a similar fashion. The 11th tone of the scale is just an octave above the fourth, while the 13th is an octave above the sixth. The 13th is one of the most used gospel jazz chords. By extending chords to these extremes, you’ll hear some interesting tonalities and overtones develop in a well-tuned instrument.
Since every note of these chords is easily played on a piano, the resulting sound may get a little muddy. Some of the tones create a clash with other tones. A clash is when two notes that are a half step apart are played together. Sometimes a clash is useful, while at other times it isn’t. For these reasons, less important tones are often left out of extended gospel jazz chords. Take the ninth chord, for example. The fifth is often dropped from the chord to create a cleaner emphasis on the third, seventh and ninth tones of the chord. Try it and hear the difference.
Though it all seems a bit complex at first, the simple theory of gospel jazz chords comes naturally with a little practice. Try these chords in different keys, leave out different chord tones, and find out what gospel jazz chords sound best to you. These chords are useful in other jazz styles, as well. Even popular music today makes slick use of extended gospel jazz chords. Tasteful use of these chords can spice up even the most ordinary of hymns and gospel songs.
